Via the uvPartylist we heard about an interesting show going on at the HOP this weekend. There will be a marionette show titled The Fortune Teller . While you may think a marionette show is for children, this one seems different. The Village Voice describes it as,

“A marionette show featuring the seven deadly sins…for those souls with a taste for the elegantly macabre…To miss it— now, that would be a sin.”

Showtimes are:
Friday, January 9 • 7 pm & 9 pm
Saturday, January 10 • 2 pm & 7 pm
The Moore Theater
$26 • Dartmouth students $5
Onstage General admission seating

Visit the HOP Website for more info

In addition to the performances above you can see a free behind-the-scenes look at the show.

Join Phantom Limb for a behind-the-scenes look into the making of “The Fortune Teller,” a tour of the transformation mansion set, marionette demonstration by Erik Sanko and discussion with the artistic directors.

Saturday, January 10 @ 4:30 pm
The Moore Theater, Hopkins Center
Admission is Free
For more info, call Hop Outreach at 603.646.2010 or go to hop.dartmouth.edu

Here is another free event related to the marionette show.

Jessica Grindstaff, a multi-faceted NYC artist and designer, is going to be on-campus this week.  She’s the set designer for the amazing (and virtually sold-out) marionette performace, “THE FORTUNE TELLER,”
in the Moore Theater at the end of the week.  One of Jessica’s art forms are jewelry/award/prize badges that grew out of her performance art.  She has generously offered to give a slide show/discussion about her work this Wed. evening 5-6 pm in the Claflin Jewelry Studio.
Besides showing slides and actual artwork, one of the topics Jessica is going to cover is how she took a fairly unique concept and brought it to fruition.  Jessica’s talk will be of interest to artists of all media areas.

Wed. Jan. 7th, 5-6 pm
Claflin Jewelry Studio
Free and Open to All

New Year GraphicsThere are a few New Year’s eve parties in the Upper Valley this year. Electra Night Club is having an New Years Eve bash with Eric G spinning “old school to the hottest Hip-Hop, Dance, Reggae and Reggaeton tracks”.

Salt Hill is also having a New Year’s Eve bash with the band About Gladys talking the stage at 9pm. About Gladys is “one of the Upper Valley’s premier funk/rock trios!”

New this year to the list of parties is the first annual Janus and the Whale Celebration at Whaleback Ski Area. It sounds like they have several bands lined up to play. The event is also a fund raiser for Tri-County Cap, Inc Homeless programs. With this economy I’m sure the need is greater than ever. Tickets are $20 at the door. 9 PM - 1:00 AM. 21+.

Anyone know of other New Years Eve parties we should know about?

I’ve come up with a hybrid Friday 5 to incorproate a little bit of “Wednesday Where” and “Thirsty Thursday” too, all with local twist and a topping of winter:

  1. Where is your favorite local spot to buy gifts?  And/or what local shop would you most like to get a gift FROM?
  2. Where is your favorite local place to grab a drink with some friends?  And what is your favorite drink there?
  3. Where is your favorite local winter outdoor activity spot (for sledding or skiing or fort-building or polar plunge, etc.)
  4. Your driveway or walkway - shovel, snowblow, or plow?
  5. Where is your favorite (or ideal) NON-local winter get-away?

I was surfing the Killington Website when I read an interesting article in the Killington Insider. The big news is that the new Sky Peak Express Quad is going to open today (Friday). This is great news for me since I like the trails off of Skye Peak and ride that lift a lot.

They are also opening some new free style terrain trails on Skye Peak called The Stash (See Map), which should be good news for riders.

I’ve already begun seeing a few “best of 2008″ lists from various publications, and it made me start reflecting back on the year in arts & media. Personally, I found this to be a great year for music as I found a load of new artists that I’ve grown to love. How about you?

I’d make this a Friday 5×5, but that may prove to be a bit overwhelming. No minimum or maximum answers here — name as many (or as few) as you deem worthy!

For 2008:

  1. Best music?
  2. Best movie?
  3. Best book?
  4. Best trip you took?
  5. Best memory of the year?
